OLIVET, Mich. - The Calvin volleyball team continued its stretch of strong play with a 3-0 win at Olivet on Wednesday by the scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-13.
The Knights came out strong on the attack, hitting .556 in the opening set with 15 kills without an error to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Comets took an early lead in the second game, but the Knights came back to take control and closed the set with eight straight points, the last seven of which came on the serve of
Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison).
Calvin continued that momentum into the third set, building a big lead before closing the match on a service ace from
Alyssa DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) to secure the sweep.
Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Timothy Christian) and
Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) paced the Calvin attack with 10 kills apiece.
Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) chipped in seven kills to go with a team-high 12 digs.Â
DeVries finished with 30 assists, while DeVries,Wrubel and
Tori Roskamp (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian)Â each recorded three service aces.
Calvin improved to 16-3 on the season and 5-0 in MIAA play with the win. The Comets fell to 3-16 overall and 1-4 in league play in defeat.
COACH'S COMMENT: "We got a win on the road, which is always good," Calvin head coach Dr.
Amber Warners said. "We will keep working to get better."
NEXT UP: Calvin volleyball will return home this weekend to host the two-day Midwest Invitational. The Knights will host North Central (Ill.) at and Millikin on Friday, October 14, before facing North Park on Saturday, October 15.
