GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin volleyball team continued its unbeaten run through MIAA play with a 3-0 win over Adrian by the scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-21 on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs were no match early on, as the Knights' defense at the net and the back row held them to a -.023 attack efficiency to win the opening set 25-12.
After Calvin took the second set 25-17, the Bulldogs kept things close in the third and trailed 22-20 late in the set. The Knights were able to hold them off, however, as
Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Timothy Christian) recorded kills on two of the last three points to secure the win.
Westra led all players with 13 kills and added 14 digs, while
Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) added 12 kills while hitting .355 on the attack.Â
Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, Mich./Wyoming) also had a strong night with seven kills and hit .455 to go with three blocks.
Four Calvin players finished with at least 10 digs in the match, led by
Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) with 23.
Alyssa DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded 34 assists, 13 digs and one solo block.
Calvin improved to 20-3 on the season and 6-0 in MIAA play with the win. Adrian fell to 11-8 overall and 4-2 in league play in defeat.
COACH'S COMMENT: "I saw a lot of resiliency," Calvin head coach Dr.
Amber Warners said. "I thought there were very long rallies tonight, and I thought we didn't panic and played pretty good defense. I thought we also played well at the net."
