HOLLAND, Mich. - The third-ranked Calvin volleyball team put together a dominant performance in a 3-0 sweep of number-17 Hope by the scores of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-19.
The Flying Dutch scored the first two points of the opening set, and that would equal the biggest lead they would have in the entire match. The Knights quickly found their footing with the help of four kills from
Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and two service aces from
Theresa Kehn (Brighton, Mich./Charyl Stockwell Prep) to roll to the opening-set win.
After Bos and Kehn helped set the tone in the first set, two other seniors took over the match in the second.
Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Timothy Christian) recorded seven kills, while
Tori Roskamp (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) had six kills and hit .857 in the set as the Knights built a 22-8 lead and won the set 25-12.
Hope looked to extend the match and hung around early in the third set, but had no answer for the Knights' attack as
Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) recorded five of her nine kills to help the Knights secure the win.
The five Calvin seniors came up big for the Knights in what could be their last ever match at DeVos Fieldhouse. Westra led the Knights with 14 kills and 19 digs, while Roskamp added 13 kills (with a .722 attack efficiency) and four blocks.
The other three seniors were critical in helping the Knights hold the Hope attack to .083 efficiency for the match, as
Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) recorded 18 digs, while Kehn and Bos added nine and eight digs, respectively.
First-year setter
Alyssa DeVries also finished with a big night with 38 assists and eight digs while helping Calvin hit .294 as a team.
Calvin improved to 21-3 on the season with the win, while Hope fell to 19-6 in defeat.Â
COACH'S COMMENT:Â "I think that they realized that potentially this is the last time they'll be playing in their college career in this building and they wanted to go out on the right note," Calvin head coach Dr.
Amber Warners said about her five seniors. "They just seemed full of energy and were ready to go from the beginning tonight."
