Calvin University will be the host of a special four-team swimming and diving invitational this upcoming Saturday inside the Venema Aquatic Center.

Calvin will host the Be Better; Invitational this Saturday with a start time of 11 a.m. for the competition.

Teams competing will include men's and women's teams from Calvin, Davenport, Hope and the University of Michigan.

The unscored invitational will honor the memory of former University of Michigan and Holland Christian High School swimmer Ian Miskelley who passed away two years ago.

All four competing schools will include student-athletes that were connected to Miskelley at either the prep, club or collegiate level.

The invitational will also seek to promote mental health awareness and the opportunity to donate to the Be Better; Foundation which seeks to promote mental health.

The invitational will include a mix of traditional swimming and diving events as well as non-traditional relays and non-traditional individual races.

Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos is looking forward to hosting the event on Saturday.

"We are really looking forward to this event," said Gelderloos. "First and foremost, we want to honor the memory of Ian Miskelley and show support for his family members and friends. We know that swimming was something that was very dear to him and we want to celebrate his memory by celebrating the sport that was so close to him. We also want to show awareness and support for the topic of mental health. We know this is a topic that affects our student bodies, student-athletes and coaches. We want to stress to everyone that despite the mental health challenges that individuals face, it is important to know that we are not done yet and that we can be better. From a spectator's perspective, Saturday will provide the opportunity to see athletes from all three NCAA (Division I, II and III) levels while learning more about a very important topic."

According to Gelderloos, the genesis of the invitational came through a conversation he had with University of Michigan head coach Mike Bottom last spring. "We had talked briefly last fall about doing something like this, but our schedules were pretty locked in at the time, so we revisited the idea again last spring and over the summer things started to come together," said Gelderloos. "We are just extremely pleased that we could put this event together and make it happen. We are looking forward to having everyone at Calvin this Saturday."
