GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A first half explosion fueled the Calvin men's soccer team to an 8-0 conference victory over Alma Tuesday night at Zuidema Field.
The victory bumps the 11
th-ranked Knights to 11-1-2 overall and to 3-0-0 in the MIAA standings.
Calvin scored five goals in a span of 10 minutes midway through the first half in the win, en route to the lop-sided win.
The scoring surge began in the 18
th minute when junior
Kadin Shaban (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) dropped in a well-placed cross that senior
Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was able to one-time with a back-heel shot that slid in the far corner of the Alma net for a 1-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, junior
Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Il./Lake Forest HS) got loose near the top of the box and skipped a shot off the wet Zuidema Field turn that deflected off the keeper's hands and into the net.
Freshman
Jacob Ryu (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) scored in the 22
nd minute off another assist from Shaban.
Shaban picked up his third assist of the night in the 27
th minute, setting up Schau for his 11
th goal of the season. A minute later, senior
Aguma Muhumuza (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School) connected for his third goal of the season off an assist from Ryu.
Calvin got back to its scoring ways in the second half as sophomore
Jacob Goodling (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day School) fought off a defender to whirl and smack a shot into the net two minutes in.
Senior
Colin Iverson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) scored his second goal of the season just six minutes later, banging in a rebound shot from Muhumuza.
Senior
Nathan Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) completed the scoring in the 86
th minute, redirecting in a corner kick from freshman T.J. McVey (Aurora, Il./Benet Academy).
Senior
Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the distance in goal for Calvin to pick up his third clean sheet of the season. Wunder had two saves including a spectacular one-hand deflection off a shot from the six-yard box by an Alma attacker in the second half.
