Calvin Men's Soccer Remains Atop MIAA Table With 8-0 Win Over Alma

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A first half explosion fueled the Calvin men's soccer team to an 8-0 conference victory over Alma Tuesday night at Zuidema Field.
The victory bumps the 11th-ranked Knights to 11-1-2 overall and to 3-0-0 in the MIAA standings.

Calvin scored five goals in a span of 10 minutes midway through the first half in the win, en route to the lop-sided win.

The scoring surge began in the 18th minute when junior Kadin Shaban (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) dropped in a well-placed cross that senior Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was able to one-time with a back-heel shot that slid in the far corner of the Alma net for a 1-0 lead.

Just over a minute later, junior Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Il./Lake Forest HS) got loose near the top of the box and skipped a shot off the wet Zuidema Field turn that deflected off the keeper's hands and into the net.

Freshman Jacob Ryu (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) scored in the 22nd minute off another assist from Shaban.

Shaban picked up his third assist of the night in the 27th minute, setting up Schau for his 11th goal of the season. A minute later, senior Aguma Muhumuza (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School) connected for his third goal of the season off an assist from Ryu.

Calvin got back to its scoring ways in the second half as sophomore Jacob Goodling (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day School) fought off a defender to whirl and smack a shot into the net two minutes in.

Senior Colin Iverson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) scored his second goal of the season just six minutes later, banging in a rebound shot from Muhumuza.
Senior Nathan Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) completed the scoring in the 86th minute, redirecting in a corner kick from freshman T.J. McVey (Aurora, Il./Benet Academy).

Senior Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the distance in goal for Calvin to pick up his third clean sheet of the season. Wunder had two saves including a spectacular one-hand deflection off a shot from the six-yard box by an Alma attacker in the second half.

COACHES COMMENT: "Great to get three conference points tonight," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders.  "Proud of the to put some really good stuff together at different moments. We'll look forward to Adrian on Saturday which is always a tough place to play."
