GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a meeting of nationally-ranked opponents, Wayne State defeated Calvin 137-106.
Wayne State entered the meet ranked 19th in Division II while Calvin came into the meet ranked 14th in Division III.
The Knights are now 6-2 in dual meet action.
Wayne State used first place finishes to pull away for the win, but Calvin displayed strong depth throughout to keep the meet competitive.
Calvin's first win came in the 200 freestyle as senior Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Emil Friedman) cruised in with a win in a time of 1:41.52. He was part of a 1-2-4 Calvin finish with junior Jacob Heeres (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) taking second (1:43.83) and freshman Joshua Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) placing fourth (1:48.46).
Sophomore Jordan Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a big night, winning the three-meter diving competition with a career-best total of 328.64 points while also placing third on the one-meter board with a score of 285 points, just five points off his career-best total for a six-dive series.
Calvin went 2-3-4 in the 50 freestyle with senior Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant School) taking second (21.11), sophomore Forrest Peterson (Middleton, Mn./Middleton HS) placing third (21.19) and sophomore Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) placing fourth (21.61).
The Knights also went 2-3-4 in the 100 butterfly with junior Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking second (50.70), Peterson placing third (50.85) and Campbell placing fourth (52.99).
Senior Bryce Miner (Sunnyvale, Ca./Homestead HS) was second in the 200 IM (2:01.47) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.95).
Senior Trevor Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS) was second in the 100 backstroke (54.12).
In the 500 freestyle, junior Dane Hubers (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS) was third (4:59.65) while freshman Jack Kulaga (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove South HS) was third in the 1000 freestyle (10:37.86).
Calvin went 3-4 in the 100 freestyle with Iturbe placing third (45.59) and Heeres fourth (46.21).
The Knights also placed second in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Its 200 medley relay team of Campbell, Miner, Camy and freshman Vladimir Molin (Rolling Meadows, Il./Rolling Meadows HS) clocked in with a time of 1:35.38. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Iturbe, Peterson, Holstege and Heeres recorded a time of 1:22.70.
Calvin is back in action on Saturday, competing in a double-dual meet at the University of Chicago that will also include DePauw University.
