GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin fell 159-79 in dual meet action to Division II Wayne State University Friday evening inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
The dual meet consisted of a pair of nationally-ranked opponents as Wayne State entered the meet ranked 15th in Division II and Calvin 24th in Division III.
Calvin took first place in the 100 freestyle as Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) continued her strong sophomore campaign by winning the race in a time of 53.89.
Farrell also took second in the 200 IM in a time of 2:12.47.
Calvin went 2-3 in the 50 freestyle with freshman Haley Thier (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) taking second (25.39) and senior Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) third (25.41).
Sophomore Lynda Steen (Schaumburg, Il./Schaumburg HS) was third in the 200 freestyle (2:03.54) while freshman Rebecca Streelman (Newberg, Ore./Home School) was third in the 1000 freestyle (11:43.02).
Thier placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.67). In the 100 breaststroke Calvin went 2-3 with senior Samantha Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) second (1:09.10) and senior Kylie Shaw (Dixon, Il./Dixon HS) third (1:12.03). Edewaard was third in the 500 freestyle (5:31.02).
In the diving, Calvin sophomore Abigal Morse (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) was second on the one-meter board (235.80) and three-meter board (246.23). Freshman Lydia Butler (Wappingers Fall, NY/Home School) was third on the one-meter board (173.64) and three-meter board board (175.35).
Calvin took second in the 200 medley relay. Calvin's 200 medley relay of junior Claire Sytsma (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Thier, Edewaard and freshman Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) was second in a time of 1:48.49. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Farrell, Sydney Sonday, junior Lydia Walls (Warren, Oh./Warren G. Harding HS) and senior Emilia Shokoohi (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) was third in a time of 1:40.37.
Calvin is back in action on Saturday, competing in a double-dual meet at the University of Chicago that will also include DePauw University.
