Calvin University senior Emma Merkel was named MIAA Swimmer of the Week for women's swimming and diving on Monday.

Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) won the honor thanks to her performance in a triangular against ranked NCAA II opponents Grand Valley State University and Saginaw Valley State University on October 17 at Venema Aquatic Center.

At the triangular meet, Merkel won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:53.0 that currently ranks in the top five in NCAA III and took third in the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:04.3 that currently leads the MIAA.

She also led off the 200 medley relay with a 27.2 backstroke split and finished the day with a 51.7 split to lead off the 400 freestyle relay that currently leads NCAA III.

This marks the fourth time in her career that Merkel has been named MIAA Women's Swimmer of the Week.

Calvin swimming and diving will return to action on Saturday, October 24, when it competes in the MIAA Invite hosted by Hope College at Holland Aquatic Center.
