Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. – The sixth-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team stretched its winning streak to seven matches as it took a clean 3-0 sweep of Dominican (Ill.) with set scores of 25-9, 25-15, 25-14.
The Knights cruised to an early 14-5 lead after a kill by Theresa Khen (Brighton, MI / Charyl Stockwell Preparatory). Dominican struggled to get an offense going in the first set against Calvin. The Knights closed out the set on an 11-4 run to take the set 25-9 capped off by a kill from freshman Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, MI / Wyoming).
Calvin came out storming in the second set and jumped out to an 8-0 lead after a kill by Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy). The Stars started to pick it up and cut it to a five-point deficit with a score of 15-10. Calvin got things back on track and won the second set 25-15 after a great block by Gabriella Kellogg.
The Knights began to close the match out as they started the third set on an 11-3 run after a kill by Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian). Dominican still struggled to get any offense going in the third set. Calvin closed out Dominican on a 14-8 run to win the set 25-14 which was finished off with a kill by Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hils, IL / Timothy Christian).
Gabriella Kellogg finished with 8 kills while Westra finished with 6 kills and 11 digs. Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, MI / Jenison) finished with 8 digs and the team finished with a kill percentage .326.
COACHES COMMENTS: "We played well and got to see a lot of our players in the match," said Head Coach Amber Warners. "We stayed focused and worked together. We need to come out with intensity tomorrow."
UP NEXT: The Knights will play in two matches tomorrow on September 18. The first will be against Muskingum at 11 a.m. and Cornell College at 3 p.m.
