Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin women's volleyball won its sixth match in a row with a 3-0 sweep of the University of Chicago on Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena.
The match featured a meeting of nationally-ranked teams as Calvin entered Wednesday's contest ranked sixth while Chicago came in ranked 13th.
The Knights started to gain a solid lead at the start of the first set. They took an 11-4 lead against the Maroons after a kill by Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian). Chicago showed some fight as it went on a 7-4 run to make it a 15-11 lead.
Calvin held the steady lead over the Maroons and after a great kill by Madelyn Hall (Hudsonville, MI / Hudsonville), the lead was 23-17. A service ace by Grace Kellogg (Belleville, MI / Plymouth Christian Academy) sealed the set one win for the Knights with a score of 25-18.
Chicago came out firing in the second set as they took an early 11-4 lead. The Knights began to build momentum and went on a 6-2 run to make it a 13-10 game after a kill by Heidi Westra. Calvin continued to fight back in the match and retook the lead 16-15 after an error by Chicago.
The set became a back-and-forth battle with a slight edge to the Maroons with a score of 20-19
Calvin wasn't going anywhere as it went on a 6-0 run, capped off by an impressive block by Vanessa Martinez to take the second set 25-20
The Knights used their momentum from the second set to gain an 11-4 lead after a pair of errors by the Maroons. Chicago struggled to score, and the Knights capitalized on those opportunities. They continued to extend their lead as they went on a 10-6 run to make it a 20-10 set after an ace by Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, MI / Jenison).
Calvin finished the match on a 5-1 run and Westra had the final kill to take the third set 25-11 and the match in three.
Hall and Westra each finished with 9 kills will Bos added 8 kills as well. Wrubel and Westra each finished the game with 14 digs. The Knights finished with 38 kills on the night and a .301 kill percentage.
COACHES COMMENTS: "I loved our intensity tonight," said Head Coach Amber Warners. "We won at the service line and how aggressive we were at the net. That is a good Chicago team and a great win for us."
UP NEXT: The Knights will travel to Holland, MI to compete in the Hope Tournament. They will play Dominican (Ill.) at 5 p.m. on Friday September 17.
