Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ADRIAN, Mich. – Calvin swept a conference doubleheader at Adrian, winning the opener 13-5 and the nightcap 2-1 to improve to 23-7 overall and 8-6 in the MIAA.

GAME ONE
Calvin 13, Adrian 5

Calvin jumped out to a 5-0 lead with two runs in the second and three runs in the third. The Knights then put the game away with four runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to complete the five-inning run-rule win.

Senior catcher Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) had two hits and six runs batted in to lead the Knight attack. Senior Hannah Horvath (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS), junior Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) and sophomore Kali Yant (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) had two hits apiece. Biddlecome and Yant both batted in two runs with Yant cranking a double. The Knights also reaped the benefits of six Adrian errors on a wind-swept afternoon.

Yant and senior Amber Stanilius (Sparta, Mich./Sparta HS) combined to turn a double play.

Senior Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) went the distance to notch the complete-game victory. Borst struck out five batters and walked one in improving to 7-1 on the season. Borst is now 39-10 in her collegiate career, ranking fifth on the Calvin career won-loss record. With her five strikeouts in the win, she passed Kristin Folkerts to move into third place on the Calvin career list for strikeouts, building her career total to 295 whiffs.

GAME TWO
Calvin 2, Adrian 1

Senior Bri Leegwater (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) outdueled Adrian starter Kaitlyn Hawkins in helping Calvin finish out the doubleheader sweep.

Leegwater allowed only three hits while Hawkins gave up only two.

Adrian placed its first two runners aboard in the top of the first and after a sacrifice bunt had runners on second and third with only one out. Leegwater struck out the next batter but an infield single brought home the game's first run. A fielder's choice allowed Calvin to limit the damage to one run on the ensuing play.

Calvin came back with a run in the bottom half of the frame as Biddlecome reached base on an error and moved to second on the play. A wind-blow ball hit by Stock was then mishandled by the Adrian centerfielder, allowing Biddlecome to come around to score and tie the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, Yant led off with a solo home run to left that put the Knights up 2-1.

Leegwater bore down over the final three innings, retiring nine straight Bulldog batters to seal the one-run Calvin win.

Leegwater struck out seven batters without a walk. She upped her season record to 8-3 while lowering her earned run average to 2.29.

COACHES COMMENT: "Two great wins for us today," said Calvin head softball coach Becky Hilgert. "Adrian is a tough place to play, and I thought we were locked in from the first pitch. I liked how we continued to score inning after inning and never settled in game one. Defensively we were stellar and Bri and Ellie really kept their hitters off balance and pitched well. Winning on the road in this conference is not easy and today I felt we really played our game and focused on the things we could control and we executed our game plan."

MORE NOTES….With an RBI in game two, Stock now has 37 runs batted in this season which ranks fifth on the Calvin career list….she has 108 career RBI which ranks third on the Calvin career list.
