Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. - Calvin outlasted Trine 18-14 to finish its MIAA regular season campaign with a 5-1 record. The Knights are now 7-5 overall heading into MIAA Tournament play next weekend.
Playing less than 72 hours after playing through a thrilling 13-12 come-from-behind victory over Albion Wednesday night, Calvin kept the gas pedal down early on Trine, outscoring the Thunder 10-2 in the opening 21 minutes. Junior Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) scored four of Calvin's opening 10 goals.
Trine (7-5 overall, 5-1 MIAA) used a late first-half surge to trail 12-6 at halftime.
Calvin used goals from seniors Allyson Mesman (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) and Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian HS) to take a 14-9 lead.
Trine scored four unanswered goals to trail 14-13. A Gilbert goal put Calvin up 15-13 with 11:30 remaining but Trine countered two minutes later to trail 15-14.
Calvin dug in its heels from that point on with Verrett and Mesman providing the necessary breathing room offensively. Verrett scored with 6:09 remaining and Mesman followed with a free position goal with 3:35 left. Verrett than powered in a free position shot with 1:53 remaining to close out the scoring.
Gilbert matched a career high with six goals in the contest. Gilbert was also credited with 15 draw controls. Verrett had another stat-stuffer game with five goals, seven ground balls, four draw controls, three caused turnovers and one assist.
Mesman had four goals, an assist and two draw controls. Freshman Kelly Ruha (Plymouth, Mn./Robbinsville Armstrong HS) came up with a pair of goals. Senior Meghan Economou (Hartland, Mich./Hartland HS) saw action in the field and was credited with her collegiate goal to go with a ground ball.
Sophomore Jessica Camp (O'Fallon, Il./O'Fallon Township High School) had 10 saves in goal and was credited with four ground balls.
COACHES COMMENT: "We had a gritty performance today where we had to fight some adversity and some fatigue," said Calvin head women's lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. "A credit to our players for holding strong over the final 10 minutes. We dug down and found a way to win. Credit Trine as well. They came with energy but we fought it off and found energy of our own. We now look forward to a week of preparation for the MIAA Tournament."
NEXT UP: Calvin will await the official pairings for the upcoming MIAA Tournament. Tournament play is scheduled to start on April 24 with first round games.
