Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 ANGOLA, Ind. - Calvin dropped a pair of hard-fought conference games at Trine on Saturday as its seven-game win streak came to an end. The Knights fall to 16-6 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
GAME ONE
Trine 5, Calvin 2
Trine used the long ball to outlast Calvin in game one. Amanda Prather belted a solo home run in the second and Ashley Swartout lashed a grand slam home run in the third to give the host Thunder a 5-0 lead. Calvin added two runs in the top of the fifth as freshman Sydney Duong (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) doubled in senior Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Il./Lincoln Way East HS) who had doubled herself with one out. Duong then scored on a run-scoring single by senior Hannah Horvath (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS). The Knights placed two runners in scoring position but could not score again in the fifth. Calvin's side was retired in order in the sixth and seventh inning however to stunt any further Calvin comeback bid.
Both teams were credited with six hits but the Thunder used the two home runs to win the game. Senior Bri Leegwater (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) took the loss to dip to 5-3 on the season with senior Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) coming on in relief.
GAME TWO
Trine 5, Calvin 2
Trine used a familiar script to take game two, belting two home runs to overcome Calvin's bid for a twinbill split.
Calvin took a 1-0 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by junior Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) in the third. Calvin rode the 1-0 lead until the fifth when Trine's Ellie Trine cracked a two-run homer to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the frame, Duong singled and stole second. She scored on a two-out single down the leftfield line by senior Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) to tie the score 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, Trine placed two runners on with two outs and made good on the opportunity on a three-run homer by Prather to take a 5-2 lead.
Horvath singled for Calvin in the bottom of the seventh but was the only Calvin player to reach base in the inning.
Horvath had two of Calvin's six hits in the loss. Duong also had a pair of hits.
Borst struck out a season-high 10 batters in 4.1 innings of work after throwing three innings in game one and striking out four in the opener. Sophomore Kirsten Krause (Fredonia, Wisc./Grafton HS) took the loss in relief to fall to 6-1 on the year.
NEXT UP: Calvin returns to Trine on Friday for a three-team pod, facing Kalamazoo at 2 p.m. and Trine at 5 p.m. with both games non-conference contests.
