Calvin Softball Sweeps Non-Conference Twinbill From Anderson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin swept a non-conference doubleheader from Anderson on Monday, defeating the Ravens 5-2 and 8-0. The Knights are now 16-4 on the season.

GAME ONE
Calvin 5, Anderson 2

Calvin rode the pitching arms of seniors Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) and Bri Leegwater (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) to gain the game one win.

Borst threw five innings of shutout ball and was then touched up for a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. Leegwater came on in the seventh, retiring the side in order to gain her third save of the season. Borst struck out six and allowed only three hits to gain her third win of the season against only one defeat.

Calvin scored three runs in the first, using RBI singles from senior Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) and junior Addie Warner (South Bend, Ind./Clay HS) with senior Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Il./Lincoln-Way East HS) driving in a third with a sac fly to center.

Stock added another RBI single in the second and freshman Ali Schultz (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville HS) delivered a clutch pinch-hit RBI single in the fifth to stake the Knights to a 5-0 advantage.

Anderson used two hits and two Calvin errors to score two unearned runs in the sixth but did no further damage.

Sophomore Kali Yant (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored while Stock had two hits and two RBI.

GAME TWO
Calvin 8, Anderson 0 (5 innings)

Sophomore Kirsten Krause (Fredonia, Wisc./Grafton HS) tossed a four-hit shutout with Calvin exploding for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to help produce the five-inning run-rule victory.

Stock had two doubles and three RBI. Yant had two more hits while sophomore Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI.

COACHES COMMENT: "Overall we are happy to pick up two more wins today against a good Anderson squad," said Calvin head softball coach Becky Hilgert. "Our pitchers were efficient and effective against the Anderson hitters and worked ahead to get a majority of ounts in our favor. Defensively we had a few lapses in game one but but very happy how we tightened it up and focused in game two. We strung together some key hits in both games, especially with two outs and continued our agressive approach on the bases."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Trine for a conference doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m.
