Box Score ALMA, Mich. - Calvin claimed a 25-22, 25-13, 25-19 non-conference win at Alma Wednesday night to improve to 3-0 on the season.
In set one, Calvin broke a 22-22 tie with kills by freshman Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) and senior Madelyn Hall (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) and closed the set out with an attack error by the Scots.
In set two, Calvin hit at a .409 clip. Calvin's defense was strong, holding Alma to a negative hitting percentage in the second and third sets. Calvin broke open a 14-13 lead in the third set with a series of kills by Gabriella Kellogg and a key kill by sophomore Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Il./Timothy Christian HS) to pull away for the win.
Westra had another strong match with 11 kills, six digs and three service aces. Gabriella Kellogg had 10 kills and four block assists.
Sophomore Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had nine digs and five kills. Junior Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) tallied 28 assists and 13 digs. Junior Grace Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) had eight digs.
Calvin entered the match ranked 14th in the latest AVCA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll.
COACHES COMMENT: "We played some great defense tonight were very scrappy," said Calvin head volleyball coach Amber Warners. "I thought we spread the ball around better as well. We will get back to work to keep improving."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Albion in a conference match Friday at 6:30 p.m. inside Van Noord Arena.
