Box Score ALBION, Mich. - Calvin dropped an 18-9 non-conference decision at Albion Wednesday night.
The host Britons (6-1) scored six unanswered goals in the first quarter and held Calvin at arm's length the rest of the way.
Calvin (3-2) outscored Albion 4-3 in the second quarter to trail 9-4 at halftime. The Britons then owned a 4-3 scoring advantage in the third and a 5-2 advantage in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.
Junior Nick Dueweke (Clarkston, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) led Calvin in scoring with three goals on six shots while picking up a ground ball and causing one turnover. Sophomore Robert Miner (Littleon, Co./Columbine HS) had a pair of goals. Junior Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) came up with a goal, an assist and four ground balls. Senior Nathan Jindra (South Bend, Ind./John Adams HS) had a goal and an assist.
Junior goalie Evan Griffin (Howell, Mich./Hartland HS) scored a rare goal in the third quarter as he scored from midfield into an empty net after Albion elected to put heavy pressure on the ball. Griffin was credited with nine saves.
Junior Drew Stoneburner (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) had a goal. Senior Derek Sanchez (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) had a team-high five ground balls while junior defender Hunter Stearns (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) caused five turnovers from his defensive position.
Sparling was 8-for-14 on faceoff opportunities while freshman Evan Rhode (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS) was 10-for-15.
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest that will serve as the conference opener for both teams.
