Box Score Calvin men's basketball won in dominant fashion as it defeated Anderson on Tuesday night at Van Noord Arena with a final score of 95-54.
The last time Calvin faced Anderson was back in 2019 where the Knights fell on the road to the Ravens with a score of 87-81.
Senior Thad Shymanski (Ada, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) started things off for the Knights by scoring the first 10 points of the game to stake Calvin to a 10-0 lead. Calvin was pouring on the points in the opening six minutes by taking a 19-0 lead off a deep three by senior Luke Morriosn (Bristol, IN / Northridge) off a steal.
The Knights extended their lead to 28-0 after a fastbreak layup by Morrison. The Ravens finally put some points on the board with seven minutes left in the first half as the Knights were playing excellent on the defensive end.
Calvin continued to add points to its lead with a three-pointer by Alex Fruin (Beloit, WI / Turner) that pushed the lead to 40-9 with three minutes left in the half. The Knights added 11 points in the last minutes of the half and capped it off with a layup by Senior Jordan Katje (Kalamazoo, MI / Kalamazoo Christian) to give them a 51-13 halftime lead.
Shymanski led all players in scoring at half with 18 points and Katje had 8 points and 5 rebounds. Calvin shot 18-34 (52.9%) from the field and 5-13 (38.5%) from the three-point line. The Knights forced 16 turnovers and outrebounded the Ravens 22-14 in the first half.
Calvin maintained its big lead throughout the second half as it got the lead up to 44 with a score of 65-21 after a made jumper by Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, IL / Huntley). Anderson came out with more energy in the second half, but the lead was too much to overcome. The Knights ran away with the win and improved to 3-1 on the season.
Shymanski ended the night as Calvin's leading scoring with 20 points while Egekeze finished with 10 points and 4 assists. Katje finished the night with 10 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. The Knights shot 32-59 (54.2%) from the field and 6-19 (31.6%) from the three-point line. Calvin also shot 25-33 (75.8%) from the free throw line and outrebounded Anderson 37-33 on the evening.
COACHES COMMENTS: "It was a good solid effort," said Calvin head men's basketball coach Bill Sall. "I thought our defensive intensity in the opening minutes of the game was very good and helped set the tone for our team. We are happy to get the win but we can't rest on our laurels with a big weekend ahead of us against two talented opponents."
UP NEXT: The Knights will compete in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament at Hope College this weekend. Their first matchup will be against Aquinas on Friday November 27 at 6 p.m. Calvin will face Cornerstone the following evening (November 28) at 6 p.m.
