Calvin Men's Track and Field Edged by Hope in Non-Conference Dual Meet - VanHouten Breaks Hammer Throw Record

HOLLAND, Mich. - Calvin traveled to Hope for a non-conference dual meet on Friday. The Knights fell to the Flying Dutchmen 102-91.

Senior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) highlighted the meet for Calvin by winning the hammer throw with a school-record throw of 183-9, breaking the previous record of 179-2 set by Ryan Jensen in 2008. The throw was good for first place and places him sixth on the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field performance list. He was part of a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in the event as sophomore Eric Van Eck (Yorba Linda, Ca./Hope PSP) was second with a career-best throw of 165-1 while sophomore Bryce Reynolds (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) was third with a career-best throw of 161-3.

Calvin went 1-2 in the shot put with VanHouten taking first (47-6) and Reynolds placing second (45-3). VanHouten also took first in the discus (160-11) while Reynolds was third (132-4).

Senior Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian) had a big afternoon, winning the long jump (21-9) and the triple jump (42-4).

Calvin dominated the distance events with sophomore Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) winning the 2000 meter run (5:39.02). junior Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) winning the 1500 meter run (4:15.00) and freshman Ryan Vreke (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) winning the 3000 meter run (9:05.05).

Senior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) took first in the 400 meters (50.77) and then led off Calvin's 4x400 meter relay to a first place time of 3:31.44. Joining Jeninga on the relay were senior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), freshman Matthew Vos (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and senior Josh VanDyk (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS).

Calvin will now prepare to compete at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
