Calvin Clips Carroll in Non-Conference Contest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— The Calvin men's lacrosse team defeated Carroll University 19-2 on Tuesday night at Eagles Stadium. 

The Knights came out strong as they took the early 3-0 lead. The Pioneers putting a stop to the Knights streak, recorded two goals to make it a 3-2 game. Calvin resilient, scorched two more goals in the last two minutes of the quarter to take the 5-2 lead. 

Calvin on fire, notched two early goals in the first minute of the second quarter to expand their lead. Just over ten minutes of play, senior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) recorded his second goal of the competition to put Calvin up 8-2. Less than a minute later, sophomore Nathan Jindra (South Bend, Ind. / John Adams) connected with senior Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind. / Heritage Christian) and he found the back of the net to claim his second goal as well. Sophomore Jacob Gandara (Santa Clarita, Calif. / West Ranch) on a hot streak, slashed two goals back-to-back to give Calvin the 11-2 lead.

With the second half underway, sophomore Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Ill. / Grayslake Central)found the back of the cage in the first minute of play to put Calvin up 12-2. The Knights went on to score four more goals in the quarter, including three from Foster, as they led 16-2. 

Calvin recorded three goals in the fourth quarter and the Knights walked away with the 19-2 victory. 

Leading the Knights was Foster with five and three assists. Bontreger had a hat trick. Gandara, Jindra, Boelens and junior Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich. / Novi) all recorded two goals each. Senior Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian), freshman Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich. / Novi High School) and freshman Nick Duekewe (Clarkston, Mich. / Notre Dame Prep)had one goal each. Jindra led the team in assists with four. 

Calvin goalies sophomore Gerrit Kurtycz (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville) had six saves and freshman Evan Griffin (Howell, Mich. / Hartland High School) had three. 

Calvin outshot Carroll 64 to 20.

Head coach Dave Hoger stated, "We had another great team win today. Our guys are continuously working on thier craft and it's exciting for them to be able to see the results. We are playing unselfish lacrosse right now and are looking forward to getting back to work tomrrow and continuing to grow." 

The Knights return to action on Saturday as they travel to Marietta at 1 p.m. for a non-conference contest.
