Box Score 2 NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 16 ranked Calvin softball team posted a 1-1 record in the MIAA Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Maroon and Gold started a day with a 3-1 victory over archrival Hope. No. 10 Saint Mary's then topped Calvin, 8-0. The Knights move to 30-7 on the year, the 30 victories ties the school record for wins in a single season.
The Flying Dutch struck first with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Calvin responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to claim the lead.
Freshman Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) blasted the ball over the fence in right field to tie the game at one.
Sophomore Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) dropped the ball in perfectly into center field to score junior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley).
Groen struck again in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored senior Kimiko Hinatsu (Romeo, Mich./Romeo).
The Calvin defense stood firm in the final few innings. With a runner on third base, Grace Stock was able to throw out Shay Pinhey to end the threat in the fifth inning. In the seventh inning, junior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) made a nice play to throw out Katie Singer. Sophomore Bri Noorman (Jenison, Mich./Covenant Christian) made a diving catch to put away Savannah Dixon and Anna Gernant caught Sarah Jones on strike three looking to end the game.
Senior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) and Kayla Groen finished with a game-high two hits.
The home run for Grace Stock was her fourth of the season.
Anna Gernant recorded eight strikeouts in her 12th victory of the year.
The Belles rang the Knights for eight runs in the third inning of game two.
Maddie DeGroot, freshman Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian), Kayla Groen and junior Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) all recorded a hit against Saint Mary's.
Calvin will play Hope on Saturday in an elimination game, with the winner playing Saint Mary's.
