Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin dropped a 13-7 conference match to visiting Kalamazoo Tuesday evening at Zuidema Field.
Tuesday's contest marked the first-ever Calvin men's lacrosse game under the lights.
Calvin (3-9 overall, 0-2 MIAA) met Kalamazoo (1-6 overall, 1-1 MIAA) on even terms for one half of play as the teams were tied 4-4 at halftime.
The Knights trailed 4-2 but used a man-up goal from junior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) and another tally from senior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS) to tie the score.
Winkler's goal was his second of the first half and came with 3:37 left in the second quarter. Winkler added two more goals in the second half but Kalamazoo outscored Calvin 4-2 in the third quarter and 5-1 in the fourth to pull away for the win.
Winkler finished the game with four goals and an assist. Also scoring goals for Calvin were freshman Joe Son (Aldie, Va./John Champe) and freshman Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Il./Grayslake Central HS).
Both teams won 12 out of 24 face-off opportunities but the Hornets won eight out of 14 in the second half while controlling possession of the ball as the game wore on.
Kalamazoo finished with a 31-25 shots at goal advantage including 20-9 in the second half.
Senior defender Ethan Brown (Falmouth, Me./Falmouth HS) had a strong game for the Knights with five ground balls while causing four Kalamazoo turnovers.
Freshman Mitchell Wong (Schaumburg, Il./Schaumburg HS) had nine saves for Calvin in goal.
The Knights return to action on Saturday night, hosting rival Hope at Zuidema Field at 7 p.m.
