No. 13 Women's Swimming & Diving Downs No. 25 Hope on Senior Day

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 13 ranked Calvin women's swimming & diving team sank the No. 25 ranked Flying Dutch in the rivalry meet on Saturday. The Knights grounded the Flying Dutch, 166-134. The victory moves Calvin to 5-0 against MIAA competition and 9-3 overall. The Knights won eight events on Saturday.

"Today was a great way to send our seniors out," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We wanted to get back to being strategic in our swims. We wanted to perform for our crowd and we wanted to use the rivalry to find every little bit of speed, I felt that we succeeded."

The first victory of the day came in the 1650-yard freestyle for the Knights. Junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) led the way at 18:19.58. In second place was junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Calif./Home School) at 18:25.71.

The Knights recorded a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) earned her first senior day victory at 1:55.74. Junior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) placed second at 1:58.51 and sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) was third at 1:58.93.

Abby Van Harn won her second event of the day in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 23.94. Sophomore Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) finished in second place at 25.06.

The Maroon and Gold made a splash on the 1-meter boards. Senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) celebrated senior day with securing a victory at 252.30 points. Freshman Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West) was in second place at 218.05 points.

Abby Van Harn won again in the 100-yard freestyle at 52.67. In second place was Madelyn Smith at 54.79. Libby Engle finished in third place at 55.24.

Anna Serino secured the freestyle sweep on Saturday in the 500-yard freestyle. Serino touched the wall at 5:22.09 and Kendall Murphy finished right behind at 5:23.06.

The Knights defended the diving well with a 1-2 finish on the 3-meter boards. Bradley notched her second victory of the day with 252.15 points and Joselyn Smith finished in second place at 234.95 points.

The Knights closed the pool with a sweep in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Anna Serino, Madelyn Smith, senior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and Libby Engle won at 3:40.09.

The Knights will return to action on Feb. 21 for the four-day MIAA Swimming & Diving Championships at the Venema Aquatic Center.
