No. 12 Women's Swimming & Diving Sinks Albion

ALBION, Mich. – The No. 12 ranked Calvin women's swimming & diving team started 2018 with a successful Saturday. Calvin downed Albion 177-122 to move to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in MIAA action. The Knights won 13 events on Saturday.

"The women showed some depth winning in convincing fashion," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We will move forward and continue preparing for the championship meets."

The Knights started the day with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), senior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) broke the pool record at 1:49.68.

Junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Calif./Home School) touched the wall first in the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:59.80.

Calvin went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard freestyle, leading the way was junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) at 1:59.71. In second place was junior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) at 2:01.36 and sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) in third place at 2:01.64.

Hannah Chao earned the victory in the 100-yard backstroke at 59.94. She also won the 200-yard backstroke at 2:12.00 and the 200-yard individual medley at 2:15.90.

The Knights painted the diving well maroon and gold on Saturday. On the 1-meter board, senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) won at 261.20 points and freshman Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West) was in second place at 225.30. Bradley also won the 3-meter event at 277.50 points and Smith placed second at 225.50.

Abby Van Harn flexed her muscles in the 50-yard freestyle and won at 24.03. Van Harn also won the 100-yard freestyle at 52.78.

The Maroon and Gold went 1-2-3 in the 500-yard freestyle on Saturday. Anna Serino was the winner at 5:24.84, in second place, was Kendall Murphy at 5:28.63 and Libby Engle finished in third place at 5:35.91.

The Knights made a splash in the final event of the day in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Madelyn Smith, Rachel Mattson, Anna Serino and Abby Van Harn won at 3:39.23, six seconds faster than the next closest relay.

The Knights return to action on Friday at Rose Hulman.
