Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin softball team fell to 11-11 on the season with a pair of losses to Saint Mary's on Saturday. The Belles improved to 14-8 with a 3-0 and 6-0 victory.
A pair of triples gave the Belles a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Belles added another run in the fifth inning on a single through the middle of the infield.
The Knights were held to three hits in game one, with sophomore Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian), junior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), and freshman Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) all finished with a hit.
Sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) had seven strikeouts in game one.
The Belles started game two with three runs in the first inning.
The Knights defense was strong in game two with highlight-reel plays from Jessica Brasser and junior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg).
Anna Gernant led the Knights with two hits in game two, sophomore Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) tallied one hit. Borden stole two bases in the loss.
Senior Paige Groom (Potterville, Mich./Potterville) threw five innings in game two and recorded one strikeout. Groom also had her first at bat in two seasons.
Saint Mary's finished the game with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Calvin returns to the field on Monday against Cleary.
