Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Calvin softball team moved to 13-15 on the year with a split at Franklin on Friday. The Knights fell in game one 6-2 and rallied back to win game two 10-5. Franklin is now 18-10 in 2017.
The Grizzles got on the scoreboard in the first inning with the help of a leadoff triple.
Sophomore Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) tied the game in the second innng with a double to the gap in right field, scoring freshman Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East).
Franklin would get some separation with five runs in the third inning.
The Knights scored another run in the fifth inning when sophomore Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) scored from second base on a Franklin error.
"Offensively we were not able to produce timely hits with runners on base," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "Defensively we let another inning get the best of us and Franklin was able to capitalize."
Sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) had three strikeouts in the loss.
The Knights wasted no time getting things rolling in game two. Junior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) scored junior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Maddie DeGroot in the first inning.
"Our defense went all out on several balls and made some great plays behind Paige," said Hilgert. "Offensively we were finally able to string together some timely hits up and down the order and our aggressive base-running put pressure on their defense.
Franklin would fight back with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Calvin broke things open with eight runs in the third inning. Kaley Frank singled in Jessica Brasser. Kristen Newman would then single to right field to score Kaley Frank. Kayla Groen scored on a Franklin error. Freshman Katie Mumby (doubled to right field to score Kristen Newman. Sophomore Casey Lawler (Novi, Mich./Novi) reached home plate on an error. Maddie DeGroot triple to center field to score sophomore Kimiko Hinatsu (Romeo, Mich./Romeo) and Katie Mumby. Jessica Brasser closed the scoring with a single to right field to score DeGroot.
Franklin would cut into the Calvin lead with two runs in the sixth inning.
Jessica Brasser finished game two with a game-high three hits.
Senior Paige Groom (Potterville, Mich./Potterville) picked up her third victory of the year on Friday.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday at Defiance.
