Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin softball team picked up two regional victories over Wheaton on Tuesday afternoon. The Knights picked up a 6-1 victory over the Thunder in game one. Calvin mercy ruled Wheaton 8-0 in game two to improve to 11-5 on the season.
"It was great to get two wins on our home field against a tough region opponent," said Calvin head coach Becky Hilgert." I thought our defense was outstanding in both games playing error-free ball. Anna and Paige had great command on the mound and kept the Thunder hitters off balance. Our offense started the day quiet but made adjustments and in both games we had nice production throughout the order."
Wheaton struck first on Tuesday when Hannah Clark crossed home plate in the first inning.
Sophomore Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) tied the game in the third inning with a single up the middle of the infield that scored freshman Katie Mumby (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake).
In the fourth inning, sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) doubled to left field. She later scored on a double down the leftfield line from freshman Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East). Groen would score on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea).
Junior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) singled up the middle in the fifth inning to score Maddie DeGroot. Kayla Groen then singled to left field to score Kaley Frank.
Maddie DeGroot singled through the middle of the infield in the sixth inning to score Rachel Borden.
Anna Gernant dominated the Thunder in the circle, only allowing three hits. Gernant notched 12 strikeouts. She has recorded 10 or more strikeouts five times this season.
The Calvin defense shined on Tuesday finishing the double header with zero errors.
Senior Paige Groom had a season-best performance on Tuesday in game two. Groom did not allow a hit through the first three innings. The two hits allowed was a season-best and the second best in her career at Calvin.
The Knights started the scoring in the second inning. Katie Mumby tripled to right field to score Kristen Newman and Kayla Groen. Mumby would score off of the bat of Maddie DeGroot.
Anna Gernant sent the ball flying over the centerfield fence in the third inning. Kristen Newman then double to right field to score Kayla Groen. Neman scored on a single from Katie Mumby.
The Maroon and Gold added another run in the fourth inning when Anna Gernant singled to left field and scored Maddie DeGroot.
The game ended in the fifth inning when Maddie DeGroot singled to left field to score Kristen Newman and apply the run-rule.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when the Knights open the MIAA schedule at home against the No. 4 ranked Thunder of Trine.
