Box Score 2 MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Calvin softball team moved to 3-1 on the young season after splitting a pair of games at the Finlandia Dome Classic. The Knights started the day with a 4-3 victory over Lakeland and were edged in the final game of the tournament by Carroll, 8-7.
"In game one Anna had another stellar effort," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "We were able to score early and hang on defensively against a very scrappy Lakeland team. In game two, Paige fought hard to keep Carroll off balance and offensively we just ran out of outs. Now we'll turn our attention to our spring trip in a few weeks."
The Knights struck first in game one, with junior Kimiko Hinatsu (Romeo, Mich./Romeo) starting the scoring in the second inning on a fielder's choice, scoring sophomore Casey Lawler (Novi, Mich./Novi).
In the third inning, junior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) scored Rachel Borden on a ground out to second base.
The Knights capitalized on a Lakeland error off of the bat of sophomore Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian), scoring sophomore Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea).
Lakeland would cut into the Calvin lead in the bottom of the fourth on a single up the middle that scored a run.
Jessica Brasser would score what would turn out to be the game-winning run on a fielder's choice that scored sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley).
Lakeland would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 4-3 game.
Anna Gernant was dominate one again, tying her school record that she set on Friday with 18 strikeouts against the Muskies.
Sophomore Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) and Anna Gernant had a game-high two hits.
Calvin would score first against Carroll off a wild pitch in the first inning that scored Rachel Borden.
The Pioneers would rally with a six-run fifth inning to reclaim the lead.
The Knights would cut into the Carroll lead with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Jessica Brasser grounded out to first base to score Anna Gernant and freshman Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) scored Kaley Frank on a single.
Carroll would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 8-3.
Calvin would not go away, with the bases loaded, junior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) reached on an error when the ball went flying past first base, scoring Anna Gernant, Rachel Borden and Maddie DeGroot. Jessica Brasser would score the final run of the game on a single to right field that scored Kaley Frank.
Senior Paige Groom (Potterville, Mich./Potterville) threw 4.2 innings on Saturday. Freshman Mady Ellinger (Troy, Mich./Athens) came in and threw the final 1.1 innings of play.
Rachel Borden finished with a game-high three hits.
The Knights return to action on March 18 against Allegheny, for the first of 10 games in Clermont, Florida, at the PFX Spring Games.
