Box Score 2 ADRIAN, Mich. – ADRIAN, Mich. – The Calvin softball team split with the Adrian Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 17-13 on the year and 5-7 in in the MIAA. Calvin fell in game one 4-3 and bounced back in game two to win 4-3.
The Knights struck first on Saturday with senior Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) sending the ball over the right-field fence in the fourth inning. Freshman Casey Lawler (Novi/Novi HS) scored freshman Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Ia./Valley HS) on a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead.
Adrian fought back and took the lead with four-straight runs.
Senior Ashley Riemersma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) cut the Adrian lead to 4-3 with an infield single, scoring freshman Maddie DeGroot.
Lydia Gildea had a team-high two hits in game one.
Anna Gernant recorded 11 strikeouts in game one.
The Bulldogs put three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Ashley Riemersma put Calvin on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with a single to left field to score junior Caitlin Bell (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park River Forest HS), Riemersma scored on an error.
Casey Lawler recorded her second homerun of the year in the fourth inning to tie the game at three.
Freshman Kristen Newman (Chelsea/Chelsea HS) broke the tie in the sixth inning, crossing home plate on an error.
The Calvin pitchers held the Adrian bats quiet in game two, holding the Bulldogs to six hits. Junior Paige Groom (Potterville/Potterville HS) and Anna Gernant both recorded two strikeouts in the second game.
Lydia Gildea led the Knights again with two hits in game two.
The Knights return to action on Monday when they host Cornerstone for a non-conference doubleheader. Calvin returns to MIAA action on Wednesday when it hosts Hope College for the final home games of the season.
