Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Knights fell short on Wednesday afternoon to Trine on the softball diamond. Trine took game one 4-1 and edged Calvin in eight-innings in the second game, 4-3. The Calvin softball team now stands at 12-10 on the year and is now 2-4 in MIAA play.
"We had our opportunities today," said Calvin head coach Tim Syrek. "Trine is a very good team. We were right there again today and we were just unable to get the job done when we needed to at times. I think there are some positives that will come out of today and we will continue to improve."
The Knights and Thunder found themselves in a defensive battle in game one with both defenses keeping the runs off the scoreboard.
Freshman Anna Gernant got herself out of a jam in the second inning, striking out Emily White to leave runners on second and third base for Trine.
Trine scored first, grabbing a run in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Thunder would add to their lead in the sixth inning, adding three more runs.
Freshman Kristen Newman put the Knights on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single up the middle the scored senior Ashley Riemersma from second base.
Freshman Maddie DeGroot had a game-high three hits.
Anna Gernant had seven strikeouts in game one.
Ashley Riemersma started game two with a bang. The Calvin senior sent the ball flying over the fence to give Calvin a 1-0 lead in game two.
A three-run fourth inning for the Thunder erased the Calvin lead.
The Knights took advantage of a Trine error in the fifth inning. After a throwing error advanced freshman Rachel Borden to third base, sophomore Jessica Brasser sent Borden home with a single to centerfield.
Sophomore Kaley Frank tied the game for the Knights in the sixth inning with a solo blast to straight-away center for her first homerun of the season.
The Thunder got out of a jam in the top of the eighth inning. Leaving Calvin runners on first base and second base.
Kaylee Fox would be the hero for Trine with a triple to score the game-winning run.
The Calvin pitchers had a strong performance in the circle in game two, holding the potent Trine lineup to six hits in eight innings. Both junior Paige Groom and Anna Gernant recorded five strikeouts.
Ashley Riemersma had three hits for Calvin in game two.
The Knights return to the diamond this Saturday, hosting Kalamazoo College.
