Box Score 2 WHEATON, Ill. – The Knights split with the Wheaton Thunder on Tuesday afternoon in Illinois. Calvin fell to the Thunder in game one, 8-1. The Knights rebounded and took game two in five innings, 8-0. The Knights are now 10-6 on the year, Wheaton is now 12-5.
"I am really proud of how we responded in game two," said Calvin head coach Tim Syrek. "They showed some heart with how they came out in the second game. The bats came alive and we were really solid in the circle. We now have to get ready for Alma this weekend."
The Knights got on the scoreboard first on Tuesday as freshman Abby Colon scored senior Ashley Riemersma on a single up the middle.
Wheaton would take the lead with a four-run third inning.
Christina Sandstedt hit a three-run homerun over the center-field fence to extend the Wheaton lead to six runs. She later hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning to give the Thunder an 8-1 lead.
Junior Paige Groom recorded one strikeout in game one.
Four Knights recorded a hit in the first game of the day.
Calvin wasted no time jumping on Wheaton in game two. The Knights ran Wheaton's Jaclyn McLean out of the game with five runs in the first inning with zero outs.
Senior Lydia Gildea started the scoring carousel with a single through the left side to score freshman Maddie DeGroot. Ashley Riemersma drew a walk with the bases loaded to score freshman Rachel Borden. Freshman Abby Colon singled up the middle to score sophomore Jessica Brasser and sophomore Kaley Frank singled up to score Gildea.
The Knights extended the lead in the sixth inning when Maddie DeGroot doubled down the left-field line, scoring freshmen Kristen Newman from second base.
Lydia Gildea recorded her second homerun of the season with a solo blast over the right field fence. Ashley Riemersma then scored off of a double from Abby Colon.
Lydia Gildea and Abby Colon both recorded three hits in the second game, both also finished with two RBI.
Sophomore Makela Chapman hushed the Wheaton bats on Tuesday, holding Wheaton to two hits with one strikeout.
The Knights return to action on Saturday when they start MIAA play at Alma.
