Softball Falters on Friday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The softball team came up short twice on Friday afternoon against Bethel and Transylvania. The Knights started the day falling to Bethel, 8-3, and finished the day falling to Transylvania, 10-2. Calvin finishes spring break with a 6-4 record.

"I am proud of what we accomplished this week," said head coach Tim Syrek. "This was a long week, we played 10 games which is a lot and to add the warm weather on top of that makes for a challenging week. The team handled themselves well and learned a lot this week and will use this week to make ourselves better."

The Knights struck first against Bethel in the first inning. Senior Lydia Gildea flied out to center field and scored freshman Rachel Borden.

The Royals would take control of the game in the second inning posting five runs in the inning. They would also score a run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning to take an 8-1 lead.

Freshman Anna Gernant crossed home plate in the sixth inning with a walk with the bases loaded.

In the seventh inning, sophomore Jessica Brasser doubled to left center to score Rachel Borden from first base.

The Calvin pitchers recorded seven strikeouts in the loss with five from Anna Gernant. The pitching highlight of the game was freshman Kayla Carter recorded six outs, while only throwing eight pitches.

Rachel Borden led the Knights with two hits.

Calvin would strike first again on Friday, this time against Transylvania. Freshman Kristen Newman would get the scoring started in the second inning with a single up the middle to send home Lydia Gildea.

The Pioneers would score a run in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game and added three more in the third to lead, 4-1.

Freshman Abby Colon belted a shot to left center to score Gildea from first base.

Transylvania would add two more in the fourth and scored four in the fifth inning to force the mercy rule.

The Pioneers held the Knights to only four hits on Friday, two of the hits coming from Lydia Gildea.

The Knights return to action on Friday when they head to Ohio to face Defiance for a double header.
