Box Score DEMOREST, Ga. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team improved to 4-2 on the year with a 10-4 win at Piedmont College Friday afternoon. The Knights finish their spring break swing through the state of Georgia with a 2-0 record.
Calvin took control early, leading 5-2 after one quarter and 8-3 at halftime. The Knights then hunkered down and played stellar defense over the final 30 minutes, limiting Piedmont to just one second half goal to claim the win.
"It was a great effort on both sides of the field but our work on ground balls and our goalie play really sealed up this victory," said Calvin men's lacrosse coach Luke Griemsman. "There are certainly things that we need to work on to help us compete as we finish up our non-conference schedule but we are pleased to pick up a victory today."
Junior Chris Griffin (Hartland/Hartland HS) led the Calvin attack with a goal and five assists. Sophomore Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS) had four goals on eight shot attempts. Sophomore Nate Ray (Northville/Northville HS) tallied two goals. Freshman Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a goal and five ground balls while also causing three Piedmont turnovers.
Freshman Jonathan Miller (Boise, ID/Ambrose School) had a a goal and an assist. Freshman Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills/Brother Rice) had a goal and junior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian HS) had an assist.
Sophomore Ethan Brown (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth HS) had a team-high eight ground balls to go with four caused turnovers. Freshman Hunter Naggs (Cedarburg, Wisc./Cedarburg HS) was 6-for-10 on faceoffs. Freshman Tristan Parece (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary HS) had a great day in goal, making 13 saves in 16 shot attempts. Miller also saw time in goal and collected one save.
Calvin scooped up 36 ground balls as a team in the win and forced Piedmont into 17 turnovers.
Calvin will now prepare to travel to Capital University on March 26 for a game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
