GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's swimming and diving team improved to 5-2 with a 128-25 victory over Alma on Friday night. The Knights took first place in every event on the night.
"We shook the rust off tonight," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "It was good to be back in the pool tonight. It is never easy to get back after break and we are really looking forward to tomorrow."
The team of freshman Andrew Kasper (Batava, Ill./Marmion Academy), freshman Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), junior Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) and senior Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) took first place in the 200 medley relay at 1:40.01.
Sophomore Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia) touched the wall first in the mixed 1000 freestyle at 10:38.55.
Sophomore Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi) recorded a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.01.
In the 50 freestyle, sophomore Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) took first place at 22.32. DeYoung also won the 100 freestyle, clocking in at 48.90.
Freshman Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) earned his first victory at Calvin in the 200 IM at 2:09.86.
Junior Brett Stoughton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville) finished in first place in the 100 butterfly at 52.97.
Mitch Schroder finished the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 54.85.
Ben Holstege recorded a first-place time of 5:08.48 in the 500 freestyle.
In the 100 breaststroke, Skyler Fish finished in first place at 1:01.29.
On the boards, junior Dirk Tanis (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) won on the 1-meter platform with a score of 283.42. On the 3-meter board, sophomore Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) finished in first place with a score of 266.02
The relay team of Eli Holstege, Skyler Fish, senior Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon) and freshman Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:28.36
The Knights return to action on Saturday for a showdown with rival Hope College. The action is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the Kresge Natatorium in Holland, Michigan.
