Box Score 1 The visiting Belles of Saint Mary's took both ends of a doubleheader from Calvin on Saturday, winning by scores of 15-6 and 14-8.
A windy day proved troublesome for Calvin's defense and its pitching staff as the Knights committed six errors in game one and nine in game two. A strong wind blowing out to left field also led to five home runs hit in the twinbill with three coming off the bats of Saint Mary's hitters.
In game one, Saint Mary's (14-6, 3-1 MIAA) overcame a 2-0 deficit with a seven-run fourth inning. Calvin used run-scoring singles from freshmen Kaley Frank and Jessica Brasser to stay within striking distance at 7-4 but the Belles scored three in the fifth and five in the sixth to build a commanding 15-4 lead.
Junior Ashley Riemersma provided a brief spark for Calvin (7-11, 2-4 MIAA) in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer – her third of the year.
Freshman Madi Cornish took the loss for Calvin in the pitcher's circle. Riemersma went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI in defeat.
In game two, Calvin built an 8-4 lead on the strength of a three-run homer by junior Jessica Gillings in the third and a three-run fifth inning keyed by a two-run single by Riemersma.
Calvin's lead crumbled in the bottom half of the fifth however as the Belles scored five unearned runs as the Knights committed four errors. Saint Mary's then added five insurance runs in the sixth with a three-run homer by Mackenzie Duncan the key blow.
Freshman Makela Chapman took the hard-luck loss for Calvin as she was charged with 14 runs, only five of which were earned. Riemersma, Gillings, junior Lydia Gildea and sophomore Maddie Teune had two hits apiece for the Knights.
Calvin will host Alma on Monday in a conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
