ALBION - The Calvin women's lacrosse team used nearly every second of Saturday's 60-minute game at Albion to secure an improbable 15-14 win.
Sophomore Amanda Davio scored a go-ahead goal with one second left in the first half and then scored the game-winning goal with 10 seconds left in the second half to lift the Knights to the stunning come-from-behind victory.
Calvin (6-5 overall, 3-0 MIAA)), trailed 14-10 with five minutes remaining but scored five unanswered goals including the game-winner by Davio to win the game and take sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings.
"It was an incredible win but it was the result of our entire team," said Calvin women's lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. "Every team member stuck with our game-plan and our defense started creating some opportunities into transition offense at the end."
Calvin never trailed in the first half and led 6-5 at halftime as Davio scored on a break through the right win in the closing seconds of the first half. The Britons (8-2 overall, 2-1 MIAA) turned up the tempo in the second half however with a four-goal spurt that gave Albion a 13-9 advantage.
"Albion has an extremely quick and athletic team," said Boehm. "Our primary focus was to cut down their speed and attack. We were on the defensive for big sections of this game but once we found a way to start possessing the ball, we started to regain the momentum."
The momentum began with a goal by sophomore Emily Cefaratti that cut Albion's lead down to 14-11 with 4:46 remaining. Davio then scored with three minutes left and again with 1:14 remaining to bring the Knights within one at 14-13. Cefaratti then won the ensuing draw control and was able to score just seven seconds later to tie the score at 14.
"We had to start winning more of the draws to get back in the gain," said Boehm. "That was obviously a big key for us possessing the ball."
Albion had a shot on Calvin's goal but junior goalkeeper Corry Remy came up with a clutch save with 35 seconds remaining - one of 13 she would collect on the day to keep the game tied. The Britons then turned the ball over and Davio was able to get loose near the Albion goal. With time ticking down, Davio was fouled and was awarded a free position attempt which she converted into the game-winning goal with only 10 seconds remaining.
The game-winning goal was the eighth of the game for Davio which marked a new career-high for the freshman from Okemos. Cefarrati also had five goals while junior Carolyn Forbes and freshman Madeline Baas had one goal apiece.
"Amanda (Davio) and Emily (Cefaratti) had huge games but they would be the first ones to tell you that their open shots were the results of all six of their teammates in the offensive zone playing their roles. Everyone did what they were supposed to do on offense with our attack and that created space for our goal scorers."
Boehm also mentioned that a collective team effort was critical to the team's defense. "Corry Remy came up with some huge saves for us but I can't say enough about the defenders around her," said Boehm. "Albion's offense is extremely explosive and it took everyone on defense to pitch in and they did that wonderfully. We still have some things to improve on but this was a great win for our team today."
Calvin finished with a 38-33 shots at goal advantage but Albion held a 21-10 edge in draw controls including 10-2 in the first half. Remy finished with a near .500 save percentage as she saved 13 of the 27 Albion shots on goal.
Cefarrati and senior Karissa Reed had four ground balls apiece while Reed caused four Albion turnovers.
Calvin will now prepare to travel to Saint Mary's for a conference game next Wednesday at 5 p.m.
