Box Score 1 KALAMAZOO - Calvin split a doubleheader at Kalamazoo on Saturday, winning the opener 10-8 before dropping the nightcap 10-2 in five innings.
In game one, Calvin (8-16, 3-7 MIAA) collected 16 hits and scored three runs in the third, four in the fourth and three in the fifth to take command.
Kalamazoo chipped away at the Calvin lead with three in the sixth and two in the seventh but freshman starter Makela Chapman was able to hold on for her fourth win of the season.
Freshman Jessica Brasser went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and two doubles while senior Christie VanderMeer was 3-for-4 at the plate. Junior Ashley Riemersma went 2-for-4 with three RBI's while junior Lydia Gildea went 2-for-3 with four RBI's. Sophomore Maddie Tuene also had a pair of hits.
In game two, Kalamazoo (6-14, 3-7 MIAA) took a 4-0 lead through two innings and then exploded for six runs in the fourth.
Calvin countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth but left the bases loaded as the Hornets were able to win by mercy-rule decision. Riemersma had two of Calvin's six hits. Freshman Gabi Sieda also had a double for the Knights.
Chapman took the loss for Calvin.
The Knights are back in action on Monday, hosting Cleary College in a non-conference doubleheader slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
