By Mark DeHaan

Calvin men's lacrosse hosted Capital University on Saturday afternoon at Aquinas College.

The Knights came in off their second win of the season against Dubuque on Wednesday, looking to start a win streak before traveling to Ohio for a Spring Break trip.

The Crusaders of Capital proved to be too much, however, defeating Calvin 18-2.

In the first quarter, Capital opened the scoring three minutes into the contest.

The Crusaders scored another midway through, then added two goals within 30 seconds to take a 4-0 lead. As time expired in the first, Capital tallied one more goal to take a 5-0 lead into the quarter break.

The second quarter saw the Crusaders add six more goals, taking an 11-0 lead over the Knights into halftime.

Five more goals from Capital put Calvin down big before the final period of play.

Calvin then got a pair of goals back in the fourth quarter.

The Crusaders scored the first goal of the period.

Sophomore Chris Griffin responded with two goals within two minutes to put Calvin on the board.

Capital added a final goal to close out the scoring.

The Crusaders prevailed over the Knights by a final score of 18-2.

Griffin scored both goals for Calvin, both unassisted. Freshman Derek VanderBrug led the team with five groundballs. Sophomore Mitchell Alexander made 15 saves in net for the Knights.

For Capital, Brennan O'Callaghan had six goals and four assists. Brent Walton added five goals and one assist.

"We came out flat today and weren't ready to play," said head coach Kyle Hofstaeder. "Capital was the better team and it showed in the final score."

The Knights fall to 2-3 on the season on the loss, while Capital moves to 4-1.

Calvin now looks forward to Tuesday when it will travel to Ohio to play Wilmington College. The Knights will conclude their Spring Break trip by playing Wabash next Saturday.
