GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's swimming & diving team fell to Wayne State on Friday night, 132-106. The loss moves Calvin to 5-2 on the year and 0-2 against NCAA Division II competition.
"I think it was a working meet for us," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We moved some people around and tried to get some people in one more event before we go home for Thanksgiving and we just wanted to get through with no drama and consistency and I believe that we accomplished that and now one more solid workout tomorrow before we start accumulating some rest."
The Knights started the day taking second place in the 200 medley relay. The team of sophomore Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia), senior Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon), senior Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) and freshman Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) at 1:35.46.
In the 1650 freestyle, freshman Stephen Barrett (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) finished in second place at 17:21.83.
Sophomore Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi) placed second in the 400 IM at 4:26.76.
Sophomore Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) took first place on 1-meter board with a score of 255.30. He also took first place on the 3-meter board at 256.20.
Freshman Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) touched the wall at 52.67 in the 100 backstroke to take second place.
Skyler Fish took first-place points in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:01.16. Sophomore Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) finished behind Fish at 5:08.14.
Junior Brett Stoughton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville) recorded a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke at 1:03.61.
The team of senior Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), freshman Nathan Olberding (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville), junior Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) and Max DeYoung finished the night in second place in the 200 free relay at 1:27.96.
The Knights return to the pool for the Calvin Invite Dec. 3-5 at the Venema Aquatic Center.
