Softball Sweeps Kalamazoo - Win Streak at Four

Box Score 1

The Calvin softball team stretched its winning streak to four games with a doubleheader swept over visiting Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon. The Knights won the opener 4-2 and then took the nightcap 10-0 in five innings. Calvin is now 17-7 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA.

In game one, Calvin trailed 2-0 early but the Knights got a run back in the bottom of the second and then tied the game 2-2 on a solo home run to center field by sophomore Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) then tripled down the right field line. Sophomore Alyssa Bryan (Custer/Mason County Eastern HS) ran for Avila and came home on an Kalamazoo error to give Calvin a 3-2 lead.

Calvin added an insurance run in the sixth as senior Ashley Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon Reeths-Puffer HS) led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior Kelsey Pollock (Greenville/Belding HS) and then scored on a squeeze bunt by Gildea.

Senior Caitlin Callow (Muskegon/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) then tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning to finish off a complete-game victory.

In game two, Calvin exploded for 13 hits and scored five runs in the first and continued to add runs over the next four innings.

Pollock and senior Janelle Agren (Cadillac/Cadillac HS) both had run-scoring doubles in the first with Agren driving in another run with a single in the third. Junor Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) also had a two-run RBI single in the third.

Avila, Agren and VanderMeer finished the game with two hits apiece. Callow picked up another complete-game victory, allowing only three hits while bumping her season record to 10-3 while lowering her earned run average to 1.26.

Calvin is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Saint Mary's for a conference doubleheader slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
