By Mark DeHaan

Calvin College men's lacrosse hosted the Thunder of Trine University for the first game on campus this season at Zuidema Field. Calvin entered the day with an 0-2 league record and 2-8 overall, while Trine was 2-0 in the MIAA and 3-8 overall.

The Knights held with the Thunder midway through the second quarter, trailing 4-3, but Trine outscored Calvin 9-2 the remainder of the contest to defeat the Knights 13-5.

Calvin scored the first goal of the game less than 30 seconds in as senior Tim Marco found freshman Joel Schaefer in front of the net who buried the ball into the back of the net.

The Thunder responded with four goals before the end of the first quarter to take a 4-1 lead.

Two goals by the Knights to begin the second quarter cut the deficit to 4-3 with 6:33 remaining in the second quarter as Schaefer and freshman Chris Griffin found the back of the net.

Trine then scored eight straight goals over the next quarter and a half, taking a 12-3 with 12:19 left in the fourth quarter.

Griffin and freshman Andrew Haan scored the next two goals of the game for the Knights, bringing the score to 12-5.

With 1:02 remaining, Trine scored one more goal to complete the scoring at 13-5, claiming the win over Calvin and staying unbeaten in the MIAA.

The Thunder outshot the Knights 48-23 for the game while also building a 50-28 ground ball advantage. Calvin was 2-for-3 on extra man opportunities while holding Trine to 1-for-4.

Schaefer and Griffin each scored two goals while Haan added a goal and an assist. Senior Casey Harless made 18 saves in net for the Knights.

The Thunder were led by Chris Ward who scored four goals while Andrew Walters added three.

"It's good to be home after a long stint of playing at neutral sites," said head coach Joel Kamstra. "We made some mental mistakes and some physical errors, and they took too long to recover from and we let the game slip away. We're still seeing great things out of the guys, we just have to put it all together and play a collective game."

The Knights fall to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference, while Trine improves to 4-8 and 3-0 in the MIAA.

Calvin's next scheduled contest is next Friday at Alma against the Scots. The away matchup is set to be played at 7:00 p.m.
