Playing in its second match of the day, the Calvin women's volleyball team welcomed the Tigers of DePauw University to VanNoord Arena. Prior to its match with Calvin, the Tigers swept the Wheaton 25-15, 25-11, 25-18.
The Knights proved to be just as sharp against DePauw as they had against Wheaton, hitting .421 en route to a 25-11, 25-18, 25-19 sweep.
In set one, the Knights led by just a few points early on, up 7-5. An 8-3 run by Calvin, including three kills by senior
Ellie Diepersloot, then put the maroon and gold ahead 15-8. Leading by a comfortable margin, the Knights cruised to a 25-11 final for set one.
In the second set, DePauw again pushed Calvin early, holding level with the Knights until 9-9. Eight straight points by Calvin behind the serving of senior
Elise Biesboer then put the Knights up 17-9. The Tigers clawed their way back to within four at 19-15, but that is as close as they would come as Calvin closed out set two 25-18.
The third set played out much like the first two. DePauw put up a tough fight early, but after settling in midway through the set, Calvin began to pull ahead. Up 9-8, Calvin scored five straight behind the serving of freshman
Emily Blankespoor to build a 14-8 advantage. The six point edge then held through the remainder of the set, and the Knights took set three 25-19 behind a .500 hitting percentage.
Calvin hit .421 for the game while the Tigers were held to .142.
"It's kind of nice not to know the other team so we can concentrate on our side. I thought we came out and served and pass really well, and I think that reflected in our hitting percentage tonight," said head coach
Amber Warners. "I thought we came out with a lot of fire the whole day, and I liked how steady we were. We're back healthy and we're starting to get in sync, starting to get line-ups set, and I just think we're going to keep building and keep peaking, and hopefully it's going to be at the right time."
The Knights improve to 19-3 overall with the win, while DePauw drops to 17-6. Calvin now looks forward to Tuesday when it hosts Kalamazoo, with first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
