ADRIAN, Mich. - Tonight, the Calvin women's soccer team kicked off conference play with a bang when they defeated the Bulldogs of Adrian College on the road 5-0. After tonight the Knights improved to a 7-1 overall record and a 1-0 MIAA record.
Â
The Knights got their first look at goal just two minutes into the game when a hard foul from the Bulldogs defense awarded Calvin a penalty kick. Not wanting to waste the early opportunity, senior
Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) stepped up and calmly fired the ball into the back of the net and the Knights took a quick 1-0 lead.
Â
Twenty minutes later, Calvin stretched their lead when Waroway scored her second goal of the evening and made the score 2-0. At the end of the first half, the Knights recorded twenty shots with twelve being on frame compared to the Bulldogs one shot.Â
Â
In the fifty-fifth minute, the Knights stayed on the attack and earned a corner kick. An arching ball was sent into the box where it deflected off several bodies before junior
Ellery Boeving (Howell, Mich./Howell) got a foot on it and sent it past the Bulldogs goalkeeper for another Calvin goal.
Â
One minute later, Waroway put an exclamation mark on her evening when she completed her hat-trick off a header sent into the top right corner of the goal. Sophomore
Brianna Kozlowski (Boulder, Colo./Jefferson Academy) put the finishing touches on the match for the Knights when she got in on the goal scoring action in the eighty-sixth minute off an assist from
Nena Kucinski (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) and Calvin walked away with the 5-0 victory.
Â
Calvin finished the game with twenty-one of their thirty-one shots on goal while also holding the Bulldogs to just three shots. Junior goalkeeper
Aubree Lee (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) started the game for the Knights and recorded one save before being relieved in the second half by freshman
McKenna Hoebeke (Freeport, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) who also notched one save.
COACHES COMMENTS: "We are happy to earn a win on the road tonight! Adrian closed a lot of space in the attacking half and made solving things difficult," said head coach
Emily Ottenhoff. "Credit to our group for continuing to learn and group throughout the game to figure it out. Also, exciting to see a bunch of different people contribute on the field for us tonight. We look forward to getting back to work tomorrow!"
Â
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, October 3rd when they celebrate Senior Day against Saint Mary's at Calvin Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
