WHEATON, Ill. – The 15th-ranked Calvin University women's volleyball team swept Wheaton College (Ill.) 3-0 on Tuesday night by the scores of 27-25, 25-21 and 25-19.
Calvin (6-1) fell behind early in the first two sets but battled back to win both before finishing off Wheaton (2-7) in the third to complete the sweep.
After Calvin overcame a 16-10 deficit to take a 24-21 lead late in the opening game, the Thunder fought off four set points before a back row kill by
Delaney Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Centennial) secured the 27th and final point to give the Knights the set.
Sarah Bradley (Clarkston, Mich./Everest Collegiate) and
Mary Boa (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood International Charter) led the Knights with three kills in the set.
Wheaton started strong in the second set, as well, but
Lina Kasuboski (Racine, Wis./Union Grove) pushed the Knights in front with a run of three service aces in four points and the Knights closed the set with a kill by
Olivia Peterson (Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) to win 25-21 and take a 2-0 overall lead. Kasuboski had four aces in the set while the Calvin attack hit .293, led by Bradley with five kills.
The Knights led the third set from start to finish, closing out the Thunder with the help of a .429 attack efficiency. Bradley added six more kills and
Allison Moore (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter Christian) hit .800 in the set with four kills to help finish off the sweep.
Bradley led the Calvin attack with 14 kills and a .423 hitting percentage. Moore joined her in double figures with 11 kills. Boa and
Caralee Schipper (Mount Brydges, Ontario/Strathroy District Collegiate Institute) each finished with seven kills. Boa also led the Knights with three blocks.
Peterson led Calvin with 38 assists.
Tryna Vander Zwaag (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) added a team-high 13 digs with Bradley chipping in 11 digs to go with two service aces.
NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball team returns to action on Friday, September 18, when it hosts the Calvin Invite at Van Noord Arena in the team's first home matches of the season. The Knights will face SUNY Cortland and 16th-ranked UW-Whitewater on Friday at 4:30 PM and 7:00 PM.
