Explosive First Half Propels Calvin Women's Soccer to Victory Over Heidelberg

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Tonight the Calvin women's soccer team picked up a commanding win over the Student Princes of Heidelberg University in its home opener. After tonight's match the Knights improved to an overall record of 3-1 while Heidelberg fell to 2-2.

The Knights put pressure on the Heidelberg defense early and often with their first look coming just thirteen minutes into the match when junior Vivian Nagelkirk (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) fired a shot at the net. The Student Prince goalkeeper made a diving save and deflected the ball directly to a wide-open Lexi Glowicki (Rochester, Mich./Lutheran High North) who calmly sent the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal to give Calvin a 1-0 lead.

Now, with blood in the water, the Knights sent their attack in full force as less than one minute later junior Ellery Boeving (Howell, Mich./Howell) found the back of the net off an assist from Nagelkirk, her second of the game.

Junior forward Olivia Rawls (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) got in on the goal scoring action at the nineteen-minute mark before senior Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) added the Calvin total six minutes later.

The rest of the first half was quiet for both teams and the Knights went into halftime with a commanding 4-0 lead. In the first half, Calvin outshot Heidelberg 10-1 while not allowing the Student Princes to get any shots on goal.

After dishing out three assists in the first half, Nagelkirk kicked off the second half with a goal of her own when she slotted a ball into the bottom left hand corner to stretch the lead to 5-0. With just over ten minutes left in the match the Knights once again went on the attack. Calvin rounded out their scoring in the seventy-seventh minute when freshman Maya Thebeau (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) took advantage of a shot off the post and sent it right back towards a wide-open net to give Calvin the dominant 6-0 victory.

The Knights outshot the Student Princes 16-3 with twelve of those shots being on goal. Nagelkirk finished her standout performance with one goal and three assists while Boeving and Rawl each recorded one goal and one assist. Junior Aubree Lee (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) started the game on goal for the Knights before being relieved by McKenna Hoebeke (Freeport, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) in the second half. Hoebeke recorded the only save of the evening for the Knights in the final seconds of the match.
