Calvin Women's Lacrosse Defeats Albion to Move Into Second Place

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's lacrosse team picked up its second MIAA win of the season when it dominated the Brits of Albion 19-10. With tonight's win Calvin moves to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play while Albion falls to 0-3 in the MIAA and 2-9 overall.

The Knights got things rolling early in the first quarter when sophomore Delaney Johnson (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake), senior Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt), and junior Megan Gibbs (Perrysburg, Oh./Perrysburg) all scored within the first five minutes of play. Albion tried to fight back with two goals of its own before Calvin closed out the first quarter on a 4-0 scoring run as senior duo Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) and Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) got in on the scoring action.

Calvin continued to show its offensive fire power in the second quarter as it outscored the Brits 7-2 to take a commanding 14-4 lead at the half. The Knights outshot Albion 26-9 in the first half while also forcing the Brits into making thirteen turnovers.

The running clock rule came into effect early on in the second half causing it to be a lower scoring affair for the Knights. Albion outscored Calvin 4-2 in the third quarter before the Knights punched back and outscored Albion 3-2 in the fourth quarter to pick up the 19-10 win.

Calvin finished the game with a 39-15 shot advantage over Albion while also only allowing the Brits to complete fourteen of their twenty-two clear attempts. The Knights caused fifteen turnovers with junior Alex Petrusha (Milford, Mich./Milford) leading the way with three and won the draw control battle twenty to ten with junior Jessica Eenigenburg (Norton Shores, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) recording a team high six.

Smith finished the evening with four goals and Johnson chipped in three. Booher, Bethard, and Gibbs each had two while freshman Kendall Hoving (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville), sophomore Naomi Winiarski (Naperville, Mich./Neuqua Valley), Eenigenburg, sophomore Corinne Plumb (St. Louis, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy), and senior Anneliese Hanson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) all got in on the goal scoring action in the second half. In goal, junior Hannah Rizzo (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) recorded two saves while freshman Katie Dixon (Fishers, Ind./Hudsonville) also saw some time in the net in the second half.

With the Knights win tonight they enter a three-way tie for second place in the MIAA standings with Hope and Saint Mary's while Adrian holds a half-game lead on top.
