Calvin Baseball Comes from Behind to Top Alma 4-3

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Calvin university baseball team scored a 4-3 win over Alma College in the final game of its three-game series on Monday at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on Monday.

Alma (22-10-1, 10-4 MIAA) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Calvin (13-20, 4-10 MIAA) answered with four runs in the middle innings to take the lead before Ben Hoekstra (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) slammed the door shut in the final innings to secure the win.

Calvin starting pitcher Drew Diehl (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic Central) battled control trouble early in the game and allowed two runs in the second inning but held the Scots to three runs on three hits and five walks in five innings to keep the Knights within striking distance.

The Knights' offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run Thomas Paplawsky (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) home run to cut the deficit to 3-2. The home run was Paplawsky's third of the season (all in the last four games).

After Hoekstra retired the Alma side in order in the top of the sixth, Calvin struck for two more runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Brock Savage (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights Stevenson) drove in the tying run with a bases loaded single, and Josh Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) followed with a sacrifice fly to the right field fence that scored Landon Evans (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) to give the Knights the lead.

That one run lead was all Hoekstra needed as he mowed through the Alma line-up, retiring all 12 batters he faced and striking out five without allowing a base runner to earn the win and improve to 3-2 on the season.

Calvin out-hit Alma 8-3 for the game while also playing a clean game defensively. Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and Evans each had two hits for Calvin.

COACH'S COMMENT: "Gritty win for us today to finish off the series," Calvin head coach Joel Schipper said. "We fell behind early but Drew kept us in it and allowed our offense to get going in the middle innings and get the lead, and then Ben Hoekstra pitched lights out the last four innings to get us home. We really needed this one to try to build some momentum as we head down the stretch. Tomorrow's another big game at Kalamazoo."

NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action tomorrow (Tuesday, April 21) when it plays at Kalamazoo College at 4:00 PM.
