GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin University baseball team's mid-week MIAA contest against Kalamazoo College on Wednesday was suspended after 11 innings due to darkness with the score tied 4-4.
The game will be picked back up in the top of the 12th inning at a later date.
The Hornets held a 1-0 lead through six innings and added two runs in the seventh to take a 3-0 advantage into the eighth.
Thomas Paplawsky (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) led off the bottom of the eighth inning with the Knights' first hit of the game. After a
Parker Seth (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) walk and a
Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) hit by pitch,
Peyton Ruthven (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) singled home Paplawsky and
Ryan Tschirhart (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) drove in a second run with a ground out to the right side of the infield. With runners at second and third and one out,
Landon Evans (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) hit a two-run double off the left field fence to give Calvin a 4-3 lead.
Landen Harris (Paw Paw, Mich./Paw Paw/Concordia Ann Arbor) entered in a relief looking for the final out. With two outs, the Hornets tied the game at 4-4 after a play at first base resulted in the ball hitting the ground following a collision, forcing extra innings.
Harris pitched two scoreless frames in extra innings to keep the score tied 4-4 before the game was called due to darkness prior to the 12th inning.
Cam Seth (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was strong on the mound for the Knights, pitching the first 6.2 innings and allowing 10 hits (including five infield singles) and working his way around three Calvin errors behind him to keep the Knights in the game with only three runs allowed.
NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action on Friday, April 3, when it opens a three-game series against Adrian College.
