CAROL STREAM, Ill. – The Calvin University baseball team opened a three-game weekend series at North Central College (NCC) with a 6-1 loss Friday night.
Calvin (9-8) fell behind early as NCC (4-8) took advantage of four Calvin defensive errors to score twice in the second and added two more runs in the fourth inning following a
Karsten Peglowski (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) RBI-groundout to take a 4-1 lead after four innings.
After the Cardinals pushed the lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning, Calvin had a great chance to cut into the deficit when it loaded the bases with zero outs in the top half of the sixth but NCC retired the next three Knights in order and then added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 6-1.
James Ross (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) started the game on the mound for Calvin and allowed five runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out four and fell to 1-1 on the season in defeat.
Ryan Rohrer (Richland, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) entered in relief with one out in the fifth inning and pitched the final 3.2 innings, retiring 11 of the 12 batters he faced and allowing only one run on one hit while striking out five with zero walks to give the Knights a chance in the final innings.
Calvin stranded 10 runners on base for the game, including two in the first and fourth frames, three in the sixth, and then two more in the eighth inning.
The Knights recorded three hits for the game, with
Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos),
Ryan Tschirhart (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) and
Landon Evans (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) each recording one. Calvin also reached base via walk seven times, with
Noah Swope (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) and Evans each walking twice.
NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action on Saturday, March 21, when it plays a doubleheader at North Central College starting at 12:00 PM (CT).
