Calvin Men's Lacrosse Wins Against Wooster in Overtime Thriller

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In the end, a noble Knight from Noblesville, Indiana, handed Calvin a pulse-pounding 14-13 overtime victory over the College of Wooster.

Senior Braden Carpenter scored 1:38 into overtime to lift the Calvin men's lacrosse team to a sudden-death overtime win over a Scots team that came into the contest with a 4-0 record. The goal was the sixth of the game for the Noblesville native.

Wooster used a big second quarter attack to build a 7-3 halftime lead as the Scots outscored Calvin 5-1 in the second period.

Calvin (4-0) trailed 8-4 midway through the third quarter when it started to catch fire. Senior goalie Soren Thiemann (Plano, Tx./Plano Senior) aided the Calvin cause with a flurry of saves to keep the Knights in the game. On offense, senior David Blackmon (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North HS) whipped in a pass from Carpenter. Junior Jordan Warners (Orange, Calif./Crean Lutheran) converted a feed from junior Riley DeSarbo (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) and sophomore Joe Alluri (Gurnee, Il./Warren Township) followed with an end-to-end rush, allowing the Knights to creep to within one at 8-7.

Wooster went up 10-7 in the opening moments of the fourth quarter but Carpenter came back to score back-to-back unassisted tallies, weaving through the teeth of the Scot defense to bring the Knights back to within one at 10-9. Wooster's Jack Holub put the Scots up 11-9 but Carpenter answered with two more back-to-back goals, the first off a feed from Braylon Moore (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS), the second off an assist from Teddy Hollebeek (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) to tie the game at 12.

Calvin then took its first lead of the game since the late stages of the first quarter as freshman Hudson Thiemann (Plano, Tx./Plano Senior HS) whipped in a shot from the left wing after receiving a pass from behind the goal from Moore to lift the Knights into a 13-12 advantage with 5:08 left in regulation.

Moments later with 3:42 left on the clock, thunderstorms swept through the Calvin campus, forcing a weather delay that lasted nearly two hours.

When play picked up, Wooster was able to tie the game, forcing Calvin into a turnover that set up a shot from the left side of the goal by Holub that found the back of the net with 2:31 left in regulation. Wooster later gained possession and played for the final shot but had a shot sail wide in the closing seconds, sending the contest into overtime.

Wooster had a chance to win the contest in overtime but Soren Thiemann came up with a key save in the opening minute of play. Wooster regained possession moments later but the Knights turned the Scots over with junior Drew Garrison (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) making a strong defensive play deep in the Calvin end.

The defensive gem by Garrison led to a transition breakout for the Knights with Blackmon receiving a long pass up the right wing from Garrison, creating a two-on-one. Blackmon then whipped pass to a cutting Carpenter who received the back-door feed, deked the Wooster goalie and snapped a shot into the net for the game-winner.

Carpenter (Noblesville High School) finished the contest with six goals, two assists and eight points, marking new personal single-game highs for goals and points. He also bumped his career goals total to 74 and his career points total to 99, moving him into eighth on the Calvin career list for goals and 11th in career points.

Blackmon had four goals, an assist and five points. Warners had two goals with Alluri and Hudson Thiemann scoring single goals. Moore had two assists. DeSarbo and Hollebeek also had two assists apiece. Sophomore Colin TeBrake (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview HS) also had one assist.

On defense, Garrison caused four opponent turnovers and scooped up four ground balls. TeBrake caused a pair of opponent turnovers. DeSarbo had five ground balls.

Senior faceoff specialist Nate Hanson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) had a monster night in the circle, winning 23 of 29 faceoffs for a blistering 79.3 percent faceoff win percentage. He also scooped up 15 ground balls.

Soren Thiemann had a big night in goal, collecting 11 saves while picking up four ground balls.

COACHES COMMENT: "We knew that Wooster is a very good team with a fast-paced offense," said Calvin head lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "In order to combat that, that we needed to slow the pace down to give ourselves a chance to win. For the most part, we were able to do a pretty good job of executing that game plan. I think our guys also did a good job of handling the (weather) delay. We talked about focusing on things that we can control and not worrying about the weather which was out of our control. During the delay, we did a good job of staying loose and staying ready to play. Now we have a short time to rest before we face another challenging opponent on Saturday."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Carthage College on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Calvin Soccer Stadium.
