BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Today the Calvin softball team dropped two to the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan and moved to an overall record of 11-7.
Â
GAME ONEÂ
CALVIN 2, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 3
Â
The first scoring opportunity for the Knights came in the top of the third innings when junior
Aubrey Herder (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) got on base with a single to right field. Two batters later, freshman outfielder
Bella Duimstra (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian) cashed in the opportunity when she doubled to right center to score Herder and give Calvin a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Titans responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning before senior catcher
Tory Decker (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) gave the lead right back to the Knights when she hit a home run over the center field fence in the top of the fourth.
Â
However, it was Illinois Wesleyan who came up big in the bottom of the fifth inning when they pushed two more runs across the plate to swing the momentum back towards the Titans. Freshman
Kendall Jordan (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) gave Calvin a base runner in the top of the sixth but was left stranded as the Knights went on to fall to the Titans 2-3.
Â
Senior
Brooke Hunderman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian) started in the circle for the Knights where she pitched 4.2 innings and recorded four strikeouts. Sophomore
Cailin Knoop (Reed City, Mich./Big Rapids) also saw some time in the circle for Calvin as she pitched 1.1 innings.
Â
GAME TWOÂ
CALVIN 5, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 6
Â
In the second game of the day, it was once against Calvin who drew first blood when freshman
Audrey Ford (Kalamazoo, Mich./Mattawan) led off the top of the third inning with a double down the right field line. Duimstra followed up with a single to left field before Ford took advantage of a Titans fielding error and headed home for the first run of the game.Â
Â
Two batters later, junior
Natalie Bush (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) notched an RBI when she singled to bring in Duimstra before scoring a run herself on a fielder's choice later in the inning to make the score 3-0.
Â
Bush recorded her second RBI of the game in the fifth inning when she doubled to right center field to stretch the Calvin lead. Illinois Wesleyan tried to bounce back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth before freshman
Addie Edwards (Midland, Mich./Midland) gave Calvin another run in the top of the sixth when she hit a sacrifice fly to score junior
Mya Brickley (Battle Creek, Mich./Delton Kellogg).Â
Â
However, from that point forward, it was all Titans as they wiggled their way back in the game when they pushed one run across the plate in the fifth inning and tied the score with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. Illinois Wesleyan completed the comeback two batters later when a walk-off single to left field allowed them to walk away with the 6-5 victory.
Â
In the circle, senior
Emma Ludema (Martin, Mich./Wayland) got the start where she went 4.2 innings and recorded two strikeouts. Knoop and Hunderman both saw time in the circle in game two.
Â
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, March 28th when they take on Wisconsin Oshkosh at 12:15 PM and Wartburg College at 2:30 PM.
